Airplane 1

My 701 was constructed by a couple of bush workers using an axe, sledgehammer and anvil at a remote site on the shores of beautiful Lake Kanerie on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. They powered through the kit with the traditional West Coaster equivalent of a University degree which enables them, armed with a 6" adjustable spanner, pliers, screwdriver, number 8 wire and string, to construct houses, airplanes, and perform most surgical operations with equal confidence. ZK-LOK took to the skies with hardly a hitch in Jan. 98, just over 5 months from when they received the kit. One of them, Keith, has since built another, this time from plans only, and it didn't take him much longer. Big Norm, who can just about lift the 701 by himself, is presently building the Storch, another fabulous STOL design. The Storch was the other hot contender for me. LOK weighs in at 272 kg which includes trapped fuel, first aid kit, headphones, and fire extinguisher. That leaves another 272 kg for  fuel and payload. It was the payload, fuel capacity, side by side seating, ease of access,  and crosswind handling ability  that swayed my decision.  But hats off to the Storch, it can fly slower and land shorter than the 701.
